Two-color Ichimatsu Yosegi

My works

Sep 17, 2025

Today turned out to be another extremely hot day. The temperature must be around 35 degrees… According to the forecast, this heat will last today and tomorrow 😂 I continued my work today, just as I did yesterday. From here, I will be making three kinds 4-sun boxes in a row. The assembly of the 27-steps boxes was finished today. As for the 18-steps boxes, I prepared the materials and completed the preliminary work for the frame parts.
That is as far as I went with each task today, and now I will wait for the glue to dry. Tomorrow I will continue with one of the two projects. Since the afternoon is very hot today, I avoided machine work and tried to do as much of it as possible in the morning.

After finishing these 18-steps boxes, I plan to make another set of 27-steps boxes, and today I checked (prepared) the Ichimatsu Yosegi that I will use for them. This time I decided to use the two-color Ichimatsu Yosegi that I had previously used for the 4-sun size knockbox. It may look a little simple, but there are many people who prefer this kind of plain pattern, and I sometimes receive requests for it.
Recently I have not made them, but the boxes made from only one kind of wood (especially Walnut) are very popular. As I wrote before, this Ichimatsu pattern is the non-diagonal type, which gives a stronger sense of Japanese style. However, attaching it requires more care, because I have to make sure the pattern does not become diagonal when gluing it.
Lately I have been making Ichimatsu patterns with Magnolia and Mizuki wood, but if possible I would like to make the type with Walnut and Magnolia. I used it before for the knockbox boxes, and I think it looks more beautiful because the contrast of colors is stronger than with Magnolia alone (photo).

Today I uploaded this month’s limited boxes. They are 4.2-sun boxes with creative Yosegi patterns. This time I made only a small number. With this, the series of this design boxes is finished. I am thinking of creating something new again in the future.
