Making small puzzle boxes

My works

It is another cold morning today (around 8 a.m.). Even though it is Saturday, I came to the workshop early because I have a few errands to take care of. I think I will work for a long time today. Since it is cold in the morning, I will not use machines and will do seated work such as attaching parts instead..haha😅 Luckily, I have not finished attaching the parts for the 3-sun 12-step Japanese puzzle boxes that I started working on yesterday. I will do that first. After that, I need to glue the yosegi sheets onto the yosegi panels for these 3-sun boxes. The side panels of the boxes are walnut, but the top and bottom panels are traditional yosegi, and I have not glued those on yet. That is how I plan to move forward with today’s work.

January is already coming to an end today. I feel that this month went well, and I was able to do work that I am personally satisfied with. It may be hard to notice, but I focused on making more higher-priced pieces this month. The small boxes I am working on now, the 3-sun boxes, are the first small boxes I have made this year. This year, I was thinking of reducing the number of smaller boxes a little. This time, however, these are made-to-order pieces requested last year, so I am making them now (with a small amount kept for my own stock as well). By small boxes, I mean 2-sun (about 6 cm), 2-sun cubes, and 3-sun sizes. I have made many small boxes in the past, but because the number of pieces becomes large, the work can easily get very busy. I would like to work in a way that allows me not to rush so much. For February, I am thinking about making 5-sun boxes with drawers. Since I recently added a nested type drawer box that includes a small case-like box inside, I realized that I need a bit more stock of the 5-sun drawer boxes. I would like to move forward with that as well.

Since it is unusual for me to already be at the workshop on a Saturday, I decided to write a little about my work today. The photo shows Mount Fuji as seen from my workshop this morning. Right now, the local government is reinforcing the riverbank in front of the workshop, so there is heavy construction equipment placed there.
