Gluing sheets on a rainy day

My works

I had some errands in the morning today, so I started work in the afternoon. However, the rain got quite heavy, and the humidity was high, so I was thinking about what kind of work to do. Just then, the walnut sheets I had ordered for the 4-sun boxes arrived, so I worked on gluing those, along with the yosegi for the 3-sun boxes. I also managed to finish the checkerboard yosegi for the 3-sun side panels in time, so I glued as much as I needed for now. Now I can continue working on both the 3-sun and 4-sun puzzle boxes.

Now that the 18-steps Mame puzzle boxes are finished, I would like to start preparing for the next pieces. Next, I am planning to make double compartment boxes in the 4-sun size. I have received a few requests for them, and I was planning to make them this year. I will include a small amount for my own stock as well, and make them as part of this batch. This time, I will also make a traditional yosegi model, but I had an idea and decided to make a natural wood sheet version as well. I plan to use the walnut that arrived today and the rosewood I used earlier (by mistake), with different wood on the top and bottom panels. Since this box opens in the same way from both sides, there is no real “top” or “bottom.” The mechanism will be the same on both sides, with 7 steps on each side. It has been a while since I last made a 4-sun double box. Before, I made a 4-sun double box with a 7-step side and a 5-step side, where one side had to be opened before the other side could open. This time, I received requests for a 7 + 7 step version, so I will make it that way.

The photo shows the checkerboard yosegi I glued today. I quickly sliced it and attached it, and with the high humidity, it actually makes slicing more stable. Days like this are perfect for making yosegi sheets 😅. This kind of sheet gluing work requires some setup, so I usually only do it when I have a certain amount to work on. This time, along with the traditional yosegi, I also glued the checkerboard yosegi, as well as walnut and rosewood sheets. When I do this kind of work, I try to prepare materials for other pieces at the same time as much as possible.
Have a great weekend 😊
