The Golden Week has more or less ended, and today things are back to normal weekdays. I came to the workshop in the morning, but the roads were still quieter than usual, so maybe some people are still on holiday. Today, I continued attaching the panels for the hexagonal boxes and also started working on the 5-sun drawer box. I had planned to move on to the 2-sun cube next, but this time I decided to make only a small number for orders, so I will work on those little by little in between other tasks.
First, I need to glue the yosegi sheets. The most important part is the side panels. Luckily, today was as warm as summer, so it should dry well. Today, I attached the side panels and also the walnut sheet for the bottom of the box. These two require different types of glue. For the walnut sheet, I use a slightly special adhesive, otherwise it won’t bond properly. I couldn’t attach the yosegi sheet for the top panel today because I ran out of MDF board 😆 I need to get more soon and continue the work, but MDF and similar materials don’t require a long drying time, so that part will be fine. The panels expand and can warp because of the moisture in the glue, so when they are attached to natural wood, they need to be left for a while to dry thoroughly.
It was still a bit early to start making the main body, and I didn’t have much time today, so I prepared the materials for the drawer part and made a little progress. From this time, I decided to use solid wood for the front panel of the drawer (it’s a thin strip-like part). I will mostly use magnolia wood, but it may change slightly depending on the materials available. Before, I used pieces with traditional yosegi attached, but since I can’t find yosegi of the right size, I decided to stop using that method. Using solid wood makes it easier, because after assembling the frame, I can cleanly shave and finish the surface. With traditional yosegi, if I shave too much, the pattern can be removed, so finishing this part was always difficult. For me, working with natural wood designs is easier for this part. After that, I noticed I had run out of drawer knobs, so I made some. I make them by cutting a round wooden rod, and the material is beech wood.
